News has come out that Anthony Geary, of General Hospital fame, has passed away. For decades, Geary helped to bring the character of Luke Spencer to life on the soap. The actor was 78 at the time of his death.
Anthony Geary First Took On The Role Of Luke Spencer On General Hospital In 1978
Geary was born in Coalville, Utah, in 1947. He made his television debut during an episode of Room 222.
However, many fans best know Geary through his work in soap operas. Some of his earlier roles included appearances on the NBC soap opera Bright Promise and The Young and the Restless.
Geary’s big break for many was playing Luke Spencer on General Hospital. Geary first appeared on the soap in 1978.
Originally hired for a thirteen-week storyline, Geary’s character would later become part of a supercouple alongside Genie Francis’ Laura Webber. The characters’ wedding would end up serving as one of the highest-rated soap opera episodes of all time. Geary also appeared as the character on Port Charles and General Hospital: Night Shift.
Tragically, Geary’s death was announced by TV Insider. He reportedly passed away on December 14 at the age of 78.
Geary’s Husband Claudio Gama Also Shared A Recent Statement
According to the outlet, Geary’s death “was the result of complications from a scheduled operation three days earlier.” This also took place weeks before the actor was seen watching former costar Genie Francis’ appearance on Maurice Benard‘s “State of Mind” podcast.
A video of this was shared by Geary’s husband, Claudio Gama, on Instagram. At the time, Gama shared that Geary had told him, “Those are two lovely and talented people great friends and I miss them.”
Geary is survived by Gama. Speaking with the outlet, the actor’s spouse shared, “It was a shock for me and our families and our friends. For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband.”
Following his retirement from General Hospital in 2015, Geary had lived exclusively in Amsterdam. As previously reported, fans had often speculated that the actor would return to the soap over the past few years.
The outlet also ended with a few words honoring Geary. As it read, “Geary’s work reshaped daytime television, and his influence will be felt for generations. Though he will always be remembered as Luke Spencer, his legacy endures as that of a fearless performer and singular talent who left an indelible mark on the medium.”
