Late-night talk shows often take aim at the current administration. The FCC is keeping a close eye on the late-night shows and ABC’s The View. But another ABC show took a surprising dig at President Trump in a recent episode. Keep reading for all the details on the shade Grey’s Anatomy threw at him.
Grey’s Anatomy Makes Subtle Dig At President Trump
Grey’s Anatomy has been a fixture of ABC’s Thursday night line-up since 2005. The show follows the staff and patients at the fictional Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Seattle, Washington. It’s not uncommon for the daytime drama to express, through its characters, left-leaning ideologies. One memorable episode featured female staffers lining the halls for a sexual assault victim going into surgery.
The ABC drama was created by Shonda Rhimes, but Meg Marinis is the current showrunner for Grey’s Anatomy. The episode that aired this week, “Love the Way You Lie,” took aim at President Trump with an unexpected reference.
A patient of Bailey’s (Chandra Wilson) named Katie Rogers (played by Samantha Marie Ware) returned to the hospital as her organs began to fail. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much the doctors could do but put her in hospice and make her comfortable.
In an emotional scene, Bailey vented to Lucas (Niko (Terho) about the heartbreaking situation. “Katie is dying from bureaucratic stupidity. Years of hard work finally developed medicine that was working, but instead of helping people access it, our government is dismantling science. Just like that, clinical trial gone,” the character said.

Bailey continued, “And it’s not just Katie’s cancer. Maternal diabetes prevention, substance abuse programs — space exploration is even on the damn chopping block! Just decades of groundbreaking work without even a single thought to its cost in human lives.”
The show didn’t mention President Trump by name, but the subtle dig was pretty clear. The current administration has made many cuts to federal funding for medical research.
Fans Loving This Season of Grey’s
After twenty years on television, Grey’s Anatomy slipped in ratings over the last few years. But fans took to Reddit to gush over the current season.
- “Season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy is actually good.”

Other viewers took to the comments in agreement.
- “I like it so far as well! This season somehow feels more Grey‘s Anatomy again than some of the previous did. and I actually find myself looking forward to the new episodes”
- “It’s better than anything in years. It’s the lower budget that makes it confusing to tell if it’s any good, but it’s better than – say – season freaking seventeen!”
- “this is the first intern class since MAGIC that were all introduced as regular characters rather than side characters, which was a great decision because we can finally get an intern class to invest in and enjoy as their own characters rather than supporting characters for the attendings.”
Season 22 wraps up soon. ABC has yet to renew it for another season. Share your thoughts on the show’s dig at President Trump in the comments.
