Get dinner on the table in under 30 minutes with this easy ground turkey tacos recipe! Perfect for a busy weeknight, these are flavorful, simple, and filling. Ground turkey cooked in a mixture of tomato sauce and seasonings and then added to warmed tortillas and finished with your favorite taco toppings, you’ll want to make these quick ground turkey tacos on repeat!

Taco Tuesday has never been easier than with these super easy ground turkey tacos! I feel like I make these tacos on repeat, especially when I spot ground turkey on sale! I love how they’re a bit lighter than using beef or pork while still being hearty and filling.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • You can get these ground turkey tacos on the table in 30 minutes or faster! The ground turkey only takes around 10 to 11 minutes to cook and I think the part that takes the longest in this recipe is prepping the toppings (ie chopping the lettuce, then washing and drying it.)
    • Just because it’s ground turkey, it does not mean these tacos are dry and flavorless! They’re cooked in tomato sauce, chicken broth, and a generous amount of seasoning, so they’re saucy, flavorful, and guaranteed to be a household hit.
    • These are always a hit because of all the different ways you can top these, that everyone leaves the dinner table happy. Everyone gets their favorite toppings and you don’t have to worry about a picky eater!

    Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make ground turkey tacos.

oil — you’ll need oil to cook the meat with. You can also use any other neutral oil such as avocado oil.

onions — I use a small yellow onion.

garlic — I always have minced garlic in my freezer as part of my yearly prep. I highly recommend it so you don’t have to mince garlic for every recipe!

salt — feel free to add more kosher salt than I do, but I find the taco seasoning to be salty enough.

ground turkey — you can use lean ground turkey, ground turkey breast, 85% lean turkey, etc. It’s up to you!

taco seasoning — you can use store-bought or make my homemade low sodium taco seasoning for this ground turkey taco recipe.

paprika & garlic powder & dried oregano — I like to add a little bit of extra paprika, garlic powder, and dried oregano to the taco seasoning.

chicken broth — I use low-sodium chicken broth or homemade chicken broth.

tomato sauce — cooking the taco meat in tomato sauce makes the tacos so deliciously saucy.

tortillas — I personally like to use white or yellow corn tortillas but you can also use flour tortillas!

extras — I like to serve these ground turkey tacos with shredded cheese, salsa, sour cream, lime, lettuce, guacamole, and pineapple salsa. Serve them with what you like!

How to Make Ground Turkey Taco

Set of two photos showing onions, garlic, and ground turkey cooked in a skillet.
    • In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat and add the diced onions. Saute for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the salt and minced garlic and saute for another minute.
    • Add the ground turkey and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, making sure to break up the pieces with your spatula or wooden spoon.
Set of two photos showing seasoning, broth, and tomato sauce added to the skillet.
    • Add the taco seasoning, paprika, garlic powder, and dried oregano to the ground turkey. Give everything a quick mix, it doesn’t have to be perfectly mixed in.
    • Add the chicken broth and tomato sauce to the skillet.

Set of two photos showing ground turkey taco meat added to the corn tortilla then topped with sour cream and guacamole.
    • Stir until everything is combined and lower the heat from medium to medium low. Let the taco meat simmer for 4 to 5 minutes or until the sauce has cooked down to your desired sauciness.
    • Meanwhile, warm your tortillas. Wrap the stack of tortillas in a slightly damp towel and microwave on high for 60 seconds, or wrap the stack of tortillas in foil and bake them in the oven for 10 minutes.
    • Serve the taco meat in warm corn tortillas with shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, sour cream, guacamole, or your favorite toppings.

    Recipe Tips and Notes

    • I love to change things up. Sometimes, I use shredded cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, monterey cheddar, three cheese blend, nacho blend, or tex-mex blend! It really depends on what mood I’m in!
    • Want crispy tacos? You can fry the tortillas, like I do for my ground beef tacos or bake the tortillas, like I do for my ground chicken tacos!
    • Don’t skip warming up the tortillas. Heating the tortillas in the microwave or oven before you assembe the tacos makes them more pliable and less prone to ripping. I also find they will tear as I try to peel them apart if I don’t heat them up first. You can also warm them on a skillet or over a gas stove to give the tortillas their signature char.
    • Meal prep tip: I like to double the taco meat and freeze half for another day. That way I only need to thaw the taco meat and assemble the tacos to bake for an easy dinner.
    • For the best texture, break up the ground turkey taco meat into crumbles as it cooks.

    Make Ahead Tips

    • Meal prep: once cooled, store the taco meat in an airtight container for up to 4 days in the fridge. It’s best to store the toppings in separate containers so they stay as fresh as possible.
    • Freezer: allow the taco meat to cool before transferring them into a freezer-safe airtight container or bag before storing them in the freezer. Freeze for up to 3 months. When ready to enjoy, thaw before reheating and adding them to the tortillas and serving.
    • Reheat: Reheat extra taco meat in the microwave or skillet.
