The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have signed veteran defensive lineman Julian Howsare to a contract extension.

The 33-year-old had a career-year in 2025 when he recorded 43 defensive tackles, 13 sacks, two forced fumbles, one interception, and one touchdown over 18 regular-season games. He was named All-East Division, All-CFL, and the East Division’s nominee for Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

“Julian means a great deal to our organization, not just because of what he brings on the field, but because of who he is as a person,” said team president of football operations Orlondo Steinauer in a statement. “We’re excited to keep him in the fold and have his leadership and presence remain part of our group.”

The six-foot-three, 255-pound defender has played seven CFL seasons, five of which have been spent in Steeltown. In total, the native of Altoona, Pa. has recorded 239 defensive tackles, six special teams tackles, 45 sacks, five forced fumbles, three interceptions, and one touchdown over 118 career regular-season games.

“Julian is a difference-maker for us on defence,” said head coach Scott Milanovich. “His motor, physicality, and attention to detail shows up every snap, whether it’s setting the edge in the run game, consistently affecting the quarterback or dropping into coverage. He plays with great effort and toughness, and that kind of presence up front makes everyone around him better. We’re excited to have Julian back in black and gold and continuing to help anchor our defensive front.”

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats finished first in the East Division standings in 2025 with an 11-7 record, though the team lost the East Final to the Montreal Alouettes. Bo Levi Mitchell led the CFL with 5,296 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions after starting all 18 regular-season games, earning the East Division’s nomination for Most Outstanding Player.

The Tiger-Cats ranked third in net offence, eighth in net defence, and first with a turnover differential of plus-ten. The club’s leading rusher was Greg Bell with 1,038 yards, leading receiver was Kenny Lawler with 1,443 yards, and leading tackler was Stavros Katsantonis with 69 tackles. Hamilton ranked fourth in attendance with average crowds of 22,858, which was a 3.9 percent increase from the previous year.
