Sydney Thunder confirmed on Tuesday that India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will miss the entire 2025 edition of Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL). This was a highly anticipated debut following his retirement from international cricket and the Indian Premier League earlier in 2025, marking a significant step in his plan to become a global T20 league player. Despite the disappointment, the Sydney Thunder remain committed to supporting his recovery and maintaining a long-term relationship.

Ravichandran Ashwin misses out on BBL 2025

Ashwin prepared to debut in BBL ought to withdraw this year due to a knee injury sustained while training in his hometown Chennai. The 39-year-old underwent surgery, and no definite recovery timeline has been set, forcing Ashwin to forego his maiden BBL season.

Sydney Thunder’s General Manager Trent Copeland expressed the club’s devastation following Ashwin’s injury but emphasized the continued focus on fielding competitive squads for both the men’s and women’s BBL campaigns. Copeland highlighted Ashwin’s clear commitment from the start of discussions and showed optimism around involving him in non-playing roles through the season, including bringing him to the dugout and fan events.

“Everyone at Sydney Thunder was devastated to learn of Ash’s knee injury that has ruled him out of BBL 15, and we wish him well in his recovery,” Copeland stated in a press brief. He also acknowledged the strong team balance with a roster that includes several spinners and overseas players, giving confidence heading into the season starting December 16.

Ashwin voices his frustration after setback

Ashwin expressed his deep disappointment in a personal statement, sharing the news himself with fans. “I’m gutted to miss BBL. My focus now is recovery and coming back stronger,” Ashwin said, thanking the Thunder family and supporters for their warm welcome.

He noted that the club management, especially Copeland, made him feel part of the team from the very first conversation. Ashwin also conveyed his hope to be around the group later in the season if his rehabilitation and travel plans permit, aiming to engage with teammates and fans in a non-playing capacity. He pledged to closely follow and cheer for both Sydney Thunder teams throughout the season, highlighting his intent to contribute off the field while prioritizing his health.

The knee injury and surgery represent a significant setback for Ashwin’s transition into T20 leagues outside India, where retired international players like him gain opportunities. His comeback journey will be closely watched by cricket followers worldwide.

Meanwhile, Sydney Thunder are gearing up for a strong campaign, opening with a grand final rematch against the Hobart Hurricanes on December 16 and then hosting the Sydney Smash derby on December 20. The franchise remains hopeful that Ashwin’s future involvement, on or off the field, will help build a lasting relationship beneficial for all parties involved.
