Director Genki Kawamura and co-creator Kore-Eda Hirokazu have just dropped the UK trailer for their horror video game adaptation of Exit 8, starring Kazunari Ninomiya and Nana Komatsu, released by Vertigo Releasing.
The Exit 8 is based on the 2023 indie, survival horror video game of the same title, and will focus on “A man trapped in an endless, sterile subway passageway sets out to find EXIT 8. The rules of his quest are simple: do not overlook anything out of the ordinary.”
Synopsis | If you discover an anomaly, turn back immediately. If you don’t, carry on. Then leave from Exit 8. But even a single oversight will send him back to the beginning. Will he ever reach his goal and escape this infinite corridor?
The original video game was developed by Kotate Create and received positive reviews for its use of psychological horror and realism. An adaptation was first announced in the winter of 2024, with Kawamura confirmed as the writer and director. Our writer Robert Ewing watched Exit 8 at BFI London Film Festival last year. Describing the as “an incredibly gripping film that brings the gameplay to life in ways I never expected“. Praised its storytelling and commentary on social themes of work culture in Japan.
Ninomiya is recognised for his work in the 2006 film Letters from Iwo Jima by film icon Clint Eastwood, while Komatsu appeared in Martin Scorsese’s 2016 drama Silence.
Kawamura’s additional film credits include producing filmmaker Hirokazu Koreeda‘s critically acclaimed 2023 drama Monster and Makoto Shinkai’s 2019 anime Weathering with You. He has also published three books: If Cats Disappeared from the World (2012), Million Dollar Man (2014) and April, Come She Will (2016).
Exit 8 is due for a UK cinema release on 24th April.
