Real Madrid squandered the chance to move five points clear at the top of LaLiga as they fell to a last-gasp defeat to Osasuna on Saturday.

New boss Alvaro Arbeloa was looking to become only the third manager in the club’s history to win his first six league games, however that hope was ended courtesy of a stoppage-time winner from Raul Garcia at Estadio El Sadar.

Ante Budimir’s penalty had earlier given the hosts a first-half lead, but Los Blancos hit back after the break.

Kylian Mbappe had a goal ruled out for offside before Vinicius Jr, the subject of an alleged racist remark against Benfica in the Champions League in midweek, levelled with just over 15 minutes remaining.

As Arbeloa’s side sniffed all three points, they were undone late on to open the door for rivals Barcelona to leapfrog them into tops-spot with a win over Levante on Sunday.

    How the action unfolded

Osasuna are the only side in LaLiga who have not conceded a single goal in the opening 15 minutes of a match this season.

So it was perhaps unsurprising that the first quarter of an hour went by without much attacking action.

The game sprang into life in the 25th minute. First, Thibaut Courtois produced a stunning save to deny Ruben Garcia before the Belgian was again on hand to deny Budimir.

With the visitors looking slightly rattled, the Real goalkeeper was again at the centre of the action seven minutes before half-time.

Following a review, it was deemed that Courtois had stood on Budimir’s toe and the penalty was awarded to Osasuna.

The Croatian picked himself up to send the Los Blancos stopper the wrong way to give the hosts the lead going into the break.

In the second half, Arda Guler let fly from the edge of the box but his effort flew just over the bar.

Osasuna were looking good value for their advantage, but on 71 minutes Real thought they had levelled when Kylian Mbappe fired into the top corner.

However, as the prolific Frenchman wheeled away in celebration, the offside flag was raised and the goal was chalked off.

It mattered little. Just two minutes later, the equaliser did come courtesy of Vinicius Jr., the Brazilian tapping home from Federico Valverde’s cross.

Javi Galan then made a superb block to deny Mbappe before, deep into second-half stoppage time and with Real pressing for a winner, Osasuna stunned their hosts.

Raul Garcia cut inside beyond Raul Asensio before finishing from a narrow angle to send the home fans wild.

The effort had initially been ruled out for offside but following a VAR review, the goal was given and Real’s chance to extend their lead at the league’s summit was gone in dramatic fashion.
