Hollywood experienced a deeply bittersweet milestone at the 2026 SAG Awards, as the industry gathered to honor Catherine O’Hara just one month after her passing.

The legendary actress made history as the first woman to receive a posthumous individual SAG Award, and her Co-star Seth Rogen delivered a tear-jerking speech that left the room in tears.

O’Hara passed away on January 30 at the age of 71, following a brief illness.

Catherine O’Hara Was Honored Even In Her Death

The atmosphere inside the room at the SAG Awards shifted from celebratory to reverent the moment O’Hara was announced as the winner for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series.

After her name was called, many members of the star-studded audience, including her “Beetlejuice” co-star Jenna Ortega, were seen wiping away tears, per Page Six.

Accepting the statuette on her behalf was “The Studio” creator and co-star Rogen, who delivered a speech that was filled with humor and raw emotion. Rogen noted that O’Hara would have been deeply moved to be recognized specifically by her peers.

He described her as “generous, kind, and ferocious,” noting that she never felt the need to play down her abilities.

“She knew she could destroy, and she wanted to destroy every day on set,” Rogen recalled to a captivated audience. “She really showed you can be a genius and kind and one doesn’t have to come at the expense of the other way in any shape or form,” he added.

Rogen concluded by urging the world to keep revisiting her legendary work, and his words were met with several reaffirming nods from the audience.

While the historic SAG win offered a sense of closure, the emotional weight of O’Hara’s passing was felt before the awards season began. Following the heartbreaking news of her death on January 30, the creator of “The Studio,” Rogen, led a wave of heartfelt tributes from the cast.

Taking to Instagram, Rogen confessed he was at a loss for words, sharing that O’Hara’s performance in “Home Alone” was the reason he pursued filmmaking. He described working with her as a “true honor,” noting that her hysterical and generous nature pushed him to make the show “worthy of her presence.”

His sentiments were echoed by co-star Ike Barinholtz, who expressed profound sadness at losing a colleague he never dreamed he’d even meet, let alone call a friend. According to The Blast, Kathryn Hahn also weighed in, noting that she “respected the sh-t” out of O’Hara’s artistic integrity.

While the heartfelt tributes from O’Hara’s “The Studio” family highlight the emotional void she left behind, many were left seeking answers about the sudden loss of the Hollywood icon.

Nearly two weeks after her passing, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office provided much-needed clarity through O’Hara’s death certificate. The report confirmed that the actress died on January 30, 2026, from a pulmonary embolism.

The Blast further confirmed that the report also listed rectal cancer as the significant underlying cause, a diagnosis the actress had managed privately while continuing her work on screen.

While the public disclosure of her health struggles provided some clarity, the true heart of O’Hara’s departure was felt most deeply at her private memorial service.

Actress Kelly Lynch, a close friend of the late icon, shared a touching look into the intimate Valentine’s Day ceremony held at St. Martin of Tours Church in Los Angeles.

Lynch posted a photo of the memorial program, which featured a nostalgic black-and-white image of a young, beaming O’Hara dressed in a school sweater and plaid miniskirt.

“Rest in peace, darling Catherine,” Lynch wrote, per The Blast.

While the world mourns the loss of a pioneer, many are finding comfort in O’Hara’s own perspective on mortality. In the wake of her passing, an interview from her “Beetlejuice” era resurfaced, offering a glimpse into the philosophy that fueled her legendary career.

The Blast reported that during the candid sit-down, a young O’Hara reflected on how difficult it is to navigate the darkness of being a grown-up.

“Life is dark. There’s a lot of darkness and scary stuff in life,” she remarked at the time. However, she was quick to point out that the ultimate “gift” we are given is the ability to find a way to laugh despite it.

This message of resilience sparked an outpouring of love from fans across social media, many of whom have dubbed her the “millennial mom” for a generation raised on her 90s classics.
