It’s now mandatory to have insurance for your e-scooter and in order to get this, you’ll need to officially register your vehicle. Here’s how to do it.
Since the end of January 2026, Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) requires all personal mobility vehicles such as e-scooters to have civil liability insurance.
In order to get this insurance, it’s necessary to register your vehicle with the DGT first.
This new regulation affects all vehicles with one or more wheels that are powered by electric motors and can reach speeds between 6 km/h and 25 km/h.
The process can be done online through the DGT’s online portal. Once completed, you’ll receive an identification sticker to place on your vehicle, which is essentially like a licence plate for your scooter.
This will also enable to you buy the mandatory insurance.
In order to register go to the following link.

Once you’ve identified yourself, your basic personal information, such as NIE number, name and address will automatically show up. Verify that all this information is correct and then click continue.
This will take you to another screen where you’ll need to enter your vehicle details, such as serial number, certificate number. You can find this here. You will also need the make, and model.

Once this has been completed you will be taken to the payment page. Registering your scooter costs €8.67, plus an extra €20 to €40 for the licence plate.
Once the payment has gone through, you’ll be sent a PDF via e-mail with the registration certificate.
This document will enable you to get the insurance.
Remember, you’ll also need to display your licence plate on your scooter, just like regular vehicle.
If you don’t want to do this process online, it can also be done in person at any of the DGT offices.
