Well, Major League Baseball (MLB)’s Toronto Blue Jays did not choke a Game Seven and beat the Seattle Mariners to head to their first World Series since 1993.
Game one of the “Fall Classic” between the Blue Jays and the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers takes place on Friday, October 24, at the Rogers Centre here in Toronto.
Blue Jays Manager John Schneider announced that rookie Trey Yesavage will get the start for the Jays in Game One, with his last outing coming on Sunday, where he pitched six zero-run innings. Yesavage also pitched just over five no-hit innings against the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series. Given that he is on regular rest, the Jays hope to get a similar performance from Yesavage.
The Dodgers, on the other hand, will be going with lefty Blake Snell. His last start came against the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Championship Series, where he threw eight scoreless innings and struck out 10 batters while allowing just one hit.
Where to Watch
If you are in the west end of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Mississauga’s Celebration Square (nicknamed the Bird’s Nest) will be hosting a World Series watch party, with the event starting at 7 P.M., one hour before first pitch. Newmarket is also hosting a similar watch party at the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre with free food (popcorn and pizza) provided.
Another method of viewing the game, too, is that most restaurants, or bars/pubs, will most likely also be playing the Blue Jays game, but it will be busy, considering that this is the first World Series appearance since 1993.
If you want to avoid the crowd, Canadian viewers can catch the game on Sportsnet, Sportsnet+, or CityTV; however, they will be televising the American FOX broadcast (Ironic considering that Rogers owns both).
Currently, the monthly cost for Sportsnet+ is C$29.99, or C$249.99 per year for the annual plan. There is a Premium tier, however, which costs C$42.99 per month or C$349.99 per year with annual payments. Speaking of CityTV, there is also a standard option that raises the price to C$31.99 per month, but it gives you access to CityTV’s streaming package for more viewing options after the game.
If you have a satellite TV subscription, you can use your TV provider’s login to sign in to the Sportsnet+ app on either a mobile phone or a streaming device. However, like I mentioned in the ALCS Game 7 post, there is a limit to what content you can view on the app based on your TV subscription. The app also tends to crash a fair bit — especially on streaming services — so be prepared if it doesn’t load or freezes.
If you prefer to listen to it on the radio, it’s available for free on two of the three Sportsnet radio stations in Vancouver: 590 The Fan and 650 The Fan. The NHL’s Calgary Flames are playing tomorrow, so 960 The Fan may not be broadcasting it. The game can also be listened to on Sirius XM Channels 175 (Blue Jays radio commentators) and 176 (Dodio commentators.) If you want to subscribe to Sirius XM, the Platinum plan costs C$29.99 per month and lets you stream MLB games.
