The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶! Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶 is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past. The records that grace this column are older, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ancient – no fossils 🦴! All genres of music are welcome. In the 146th edition of Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶 (2025), we recollect and reflect on “Heart And Soul” performed by Huey Lewis & The News.
“Two o’clock this morning / If she should come a-calling / I couldn’t dream of turning her away.” Oh, really, Huey Lewis? Do tell us more! “I’d let her take her chances with me / You see, she gets what she wants.” Ooh-wee! It’s gettin’ hot in here! Grammy-winning band Huey Lewis & The News dropped a piping hot song with “Heart And Soul”. “Heart And Soul” is the second track from the pop/rock collective’s 1983 multi-platinum album, Sports. Notably, this gem, penned by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, is a cover. Country and soft rock band Exile originally recorded and released it in 1981. Huey Lewis & The News ultimately made “Heart And Soul” into a hit that peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. Beyond its commercial and radio accolades, the song was nominated for Best Rock Performance By A Duo or Group with Vocal at the 26th Annual Grammy Awards. FYI, The Police ultimately won the award for “Synchronicity”.
So, what makes “Heart And Soul” a thrilling 1980s bop? Everything, honestly! The track thrives on its sleek production and sound. The rhythm section is tight thanks to the ill drum and percussion grooves, rhythmic guitar, a prominent bass line, and colorful and warm keys. The synth leads are a selling point. They are infectious, irresistible, and impossible to get unstuck from your head! Beefy guitars shine during the chorus. There are also incredible guitar riffs throughout “Heart And Soul.” Striking instrumental section about two-and-a-half minutes in that lets the band flex. Beyond a strong instrumental, Huey Lewis earns high marks for his assertive, gritty lead vocals. He masterfully brings the tuneful melodies and memorable lyrics to life, as excerpted earlier. In the second verse, he sings, “Nine o’clock this morning / She left without a warning / I let her take advantage of me / You see, she got what she wanted.” Bummer! You know what’s not a bummer, though? The chorus!
“‘Cause she’s heart and soul
She’s hot and cold
She’s got it all, hot loving every night
Whoa-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh.”
Indeed! Ultimately, Huey Lewis & The News bring the house down on “Heart And Soul.” Folks, this is 1980s pop/rock at its finest. Timeless, timeless, and again I say, timeless!
