In a significant development ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) have released wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis, who impressed in his debut IPL season this year. Inglis will not just miss the retention list – he has also opted out of registering for the upcoming auction scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi.

PBKS, who finished as runners-up in IPL 2025, will head into the new season without one of their most impactful overseas performers from the previous campaign.

Reason why Punjab Kings didn’t retain Josh Inglis

Inglis enjoyed a promising debut IPL season in 2025, scoring 278 runs in 11 matches at an average of 30.89 and an explosive strike rate of 162.57. His standout innings was a brilliant 73 against Mumbai Indians (MI), showcasing his finishing ability and versatility in the middle order.

However, Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting confirmed that Inglis personally requested to be excluded from the retention list due to unavoidable family reasons.

“Josh is a terrific player. I would have loved to have had him as part of our squad going forward. But this year he wasn’t going to be available for the majority of the tournament,” Ponting said in PBKS’ official statement.

“For that reason, I found it pretty much impossible to be able to retain him.”

Ponting added that the decision was emotionally difficult for the team management, given Inglis’ strong debut season and his potential as a long-term asset.

Punjab Kings lose key overseas option but gain auction flexibility

The departure of Inglis leaves PBKS with two overseas slots open heading into the IPL 2026 mini auction. The Preity Zinta-owned franchise will also enter the auction room with a remaining purse of INR 11.5 crore, allowing them room to pursue a wicketkeeper-batter or a specialist finisher to fill the gap left by Inglis.

Punjab Kings now face a rebuilding challenge as they look to solidify their middle order. With the auction pool expected to feature several international talents, PBKS may target a replacement capable of replicating Inglis’ aggressive batting style.

Despite reaching the final in IPL 2025, Punjab Kings have undergone several adjustments ahead of the 2026 season, releasing multiple players (Aaron Hardie, Glenn Maxwell, Kuldeep Sen and Praveen Dubey),  while keeping faith in their core group. Inglis’ absence, although unexpected, provides the franchise with the flexibility to pivot strategies based on availability and team balance requirements.

As PBKS head into the Abu Dhabi auction, all eyes will be on how they utilize their purse and overseas slots to strengthen their squad for clinching maiden IPL title.
