Jake Paul posted a training video that reveals his fighting spirit before the match with Anthony Joshua. At the same time, he makes a comeback by declaring and guessing the winner of the fight that will be shown live on Netflix. Paul’s fight social media video enabled the transition from a mere influencer to a boxer to be vivid through a powerful montage; thus, it is now ‘announced’ that the fight between the two of them set for a high-stakes December.

The 26-year-old global boxing phenomenon, Jake Paul, is now just one week away from the boxing match, and he is making sure that everybody knows about it. Paul posted on his social sites, ‘7 Days. Big Diesel is back. It’s already written.’ The video is a combination of training footage, heavy bag work, and aggressive mitt sessions, all of which have a pounding soundtrack in the background. The fight against Anthony Joshua, a former unified world heavyweight champion, is on Friday, December 19, and it will only be available on Netflix, thus the streaming giant’s live sports presence is increased.

The video is not less than a transcription of the raw and unfiltered vibes coming from Paul’s camp. Interlaced with shouts of ‘Anthony Joshua, what’s fucking going?’ and ‘Big Diesel’s back!’ are the sounds of gloves hitting pads. A song in the background talks about the fighters breaking the faces and making the opponents ‘face us’, so it is pretty clear what is Paul’s attitude. At one point, he speaks aloud over the video, saying, ‘Joshua has all of the world looking on him… I think Joshua loses.’ The call-out is so direct that it turns the fight into not only an event but a personal challenge for Paul to beat a boxing legend.

For Jake Paul, this fight is a big jump in the competition. He had only managed to build up a credible boxing record by fighting mixed martial artists and influencers, but with Anthony Joshua, the two-time former world champion label and a career in the top of the sport, he is a whole different story. The decision to stage the fight on Netflix is consistent with the trend of major sporting events moving to streaming platforms, hence securing a global audience of millions. For Paul, it is the ultimate chance to gain the recognition of the sports world as a legitimate boxer.

The promotional campaign strongly depends on Paul’s characteristic audacity. By referring to himself as ‘Big Diesel’ and claiming the outcome is ‘already written’, he is portraying himself as the manifestation of destiny rather than just another opponent to be dispatched. This type of self-mythologizing has always been at the center of his brand, ever since he was a Disney Channel actor and Youtube prankster trying to casually become a serious fighter. The training clip is a testament to the concept – visual evidence that he is indeed doing ‘hard work’ needed for such a daunting challenge.

The reactions to the announcement have been quick, although Paul’s post did not include any specific replies to this particular video. The fight is accompanied by social media and there is already a well-known division between them. The supporters view it as the next logical step in Paul’s ambitious journey, and they commend his work ethic and the bravery to be in the ring with the best. The opponents only regard it as a circus and question whether a social media star can really compete with someone like Joshua, who is a seasoned champion. This very debate keeps the whole event up, thus ensuring that December 19th will be a ring watching moment.

Jake Paul still knows how to promote his fights in the combat sports arena in an unbeatable way. He understands the modern media to the fullest and uses it in a most creative way, blending sports preparation with content creation that goes viral. The new video is not a typical sports promotion but rather a declaration of war that is meant to attract supporters and intrigue skeptics. Ultimately, ‘Big Diesel’ will be judged for his bravado against Anthony Joshua in the ring, but the hype is already placed in the spotlight. The mix of streaming, celebrity, and high-level boxing creates an unmissable event that will write the next chapter for both of the characters involved. This event follows other high-profile streaming ventures, like the new CrunchLabs series on Netflix. Paul’s recent activities have included a Walmart partnership with Sean O’Malley and a heavyweight skit that drew criticism. He also took time to celebrate Jutta Leerdam’s World Cup medal victory. Furthermore, Paul has previously announced a personal boxing match with Gervonta Davis on the same platform.
