What The Former Today Anchor Is Doing Now

Katie Couric was a familiar face for NBC viewers for 15 years. She was an anchor on the network’s Today Show  alongside Matt Lauer. She left in 2006 for a huge opportunity as the anchor for the CBS Evening News. Katie Couric was the first woman to anchor the nightly news solo. She left CBS in 2011 when her contract was up.

She continued her news career with ABC and Yahoo. Katie Couric took her news digital earlier this year by joining Substack. Her content can also be found on YouTube and other platforms. She still lives in New York where the Today Show films.

Katie Couric Shares Tragic Day, Says, ‘Never Really Know What Lies Ahead’

Today Show viewers mourned with Katie Couric when she tragically lost her first husband to cancer in 1998. She married Jay Monahan in 1989. She took to Instagram earlier this week to share a throwback photo of her wedding day.

“This photo popped up on my phone this morning. It’s my wedding day to Jay—June 10, 1989. We had no idea that day he would be diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer just 8 years later. It made me think that we never really know what lies ahead and it was a reminder to appreciate every day and cherish those you love,” she wrote in a lengthy caption.

The former Today Show host has since remarried. She married John Molner in 2014. Katie Couric shared her second husband’s reaction to the memory of her first wedding. “When I showed Molner the photo he said, ‘Oh…that’s so nice.’ He never feels threatened by Jay’s memory and understands a heart has space for two people,” she wrote.

Katie Couric continues to raise awareness for colon cancer decades after her first husband’s death. “It’s very worrisome to see the number of people under the age of 50 who are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer increase. I’m really trying to spread the word that the age for screening has been reduced to 45,” she told PEOPLE magazine. 

Tragedy Resonates With Fans

The Today Show anchor battled cancer herself. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 but is in remission after radiation treatment. Katie Couric’s social media followers took to the comments to share their own experience with loss.
