Without All My Children, celebrity power couple Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos never would have met. He joined the show in 1995 as a love interest for her character. Life imitated art, and they fell in love in real life. The couple, who currently co-host a daytime talk show, eloped the next year.
Now, Kelly Ripa shared a big update on the reboot of the soap opera that they’ve been working on for the last few years. Keep reading to find out the latest news.
Kelly Ripa & Mark Consuelos Started Reboot Talk In 2020
All My Children aired on ABC from 1970 until 2011. It was canceled after 41 years, along with another ABC soap, One Life to Live. AMC gave us the iconic Erica Kane, played the legendary Susan Lucci. The soap opera was briefly revived online in 2013 but was canceled again within months. Streaming wasn’t really a thing yet.
Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa revealed in 2020 that they were planning to produce a reboot of the canceled ABC soap opera. The latest update came last year when it was reported that Lifetime was interested. However, that never panned out.
She Shares A Huge Update On All My Children
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos have been working on the AMC reboot in Manhattan, New York, for the last five years. During a recent appearance on the Soapy podcast hosted by soap stars Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart, Kelly Ripa shared a big update.
While she’s still holding onto hope to get the show off the ground, the update wasn’t encouraging. “We have been working on it for so long. It’s really out of our hands. It’s in other people’s hands, and yes we are all going to be on it and our cast children will be on it,” she said about the plans for a reboot.”
Kelly Ripa continued, “It’s like one of those things where you get something off the ground and then, ‘Oh, there’s corporate structuring, there’s new management.’ Then, the project falls down, and then you renewed interest. Then it’s ‘the person championing this was let go.’
She added that none of the issues with the reboot “has never gone away.” But she isn’t giving up hope about bringing All My Children back to the screen someday.
In the meantime, she plans to stay at Live with Kelly and Mark.
Why Soaps Are So Important
Kelly Ripa and her husband co-host the ABC daytime talk show. She has mostly left acting behind, but Mark Consuelos continues to act on the side. He recently appeared on 9-1-1 and has a role in the upcoming Scream 7 movie.
Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart are both still on soap operas. Rebecca Budig currently plays Taylor on The Bold & The Beautiful. But one of her early roles was as Greenlee Smythe on All My Children.
Elsewhere in the podcast interview, Kelly Ripa shared why soaps still mean so much to her. “I love soaps. It’s the greatest thing for actors to have. When we were shooting Hope and Faith, we would cast out of soaps all the time because those were the best actors. They were word perfect. They knew their lines, they hit their marks, they hung up their own wardrobes, and they didn’t leave things a mess. It was the greatest.”
“There’s a real comfort in the soaps,” she added. The All My Children reboot doesn’t seem to be happening soon, but Kelly Ripa isn’t giving up yet.
