A former Telus customer reportedly received a $25/80GB CAN/US/MEX win-back plan after they ditched the provider for Freedom Mobile.
In a post on Reddit, user ‘Quietwhales’ detailed leaving Telus-owned Public Mobile after they were excluded from the provider’s recent 50 per cent off flash sale.
Public ran the flash sale last month for a weekend, but restricted it to new customers only (however, some existing customers were briefly able to get the discounted plans). At the time, the user had a $35/75GB plan from Public.
Unable to get the discount, Quietwhales ported out to Freedom Mobile during its 25 per cent off sale, claiming the $28/75GB plan. A few days later, Telus called them offering a $25/80GB CAN/US/MEX plan “indefinitely” with its flanker brand Koodo, along with a $75 credit. Notably, the $25 price includes a discount for using automatic bank payments, and the plan is otherwise $35/mo.
Despite that, this win-back offer is really good overall. Koodo recently offered a 25 per cent off flash sale, which included deals like $27.50/60GB Canada-wide and $35/60GB CAN/US/MEX. However, this win-back offer is cheaper and has 20GB more data.
A few other people commented on the Reddit thread, noting they received similar win-back plans after leaving Telus-owned providers, while some others complained they switched recently and received no such offer.
While mileage typically varies with these kinds of deals, Quietwhales’ experience serves as a good reminder that switching providers is one of the best ways to get a better price. Many wireless providers in Canada offer better promos to new customers (like the recent bout of 50 per cent off promos). If you switch to take advantage of those promos, not only do you get a better price, but you might just get lucky and receive a win-back offer to return to your previous provider with an even better deal.
