The Chronicle Film Podcast chat continues in the latest episode of The Chronicle Take 2. Robert Ewing interviews Neo Sora, director of Happyend.
Back in October 2024, writer and director Neo Sora sat down with Robert to discuss his debut narrative feature Happyend, which is being released in UK cinemas on 19th September. Neo Sora’s previous feature was the documentary Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus about his late father, composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto.
During this exclusive interview, we discuss xenophobia, the historical context of earthquakes within Happyend, directing actors for the first time, the development of the score and if his growing up with a musician relative affected his approach to the score, and so much more. This is a truly timeless coming-of-age film about youth dealing with an ever-growing rise of authoritarianism, and speaks to the quality of the film that even close to a year later, this interview is still as timely as ever.
Please enjoy this exclusive 33-minute interview with Neo Sora. Read Robert’s review of Happyend from Toronto Film Festival 2024 here. We also have a new review from our other writer Lexi Lane, read it here.
