Match Preview for Liverpool v Manchester City

Liverpool welcome Manchester City to Anfield on Sunday afternoon for one of the standout fixtures of the Premier League calendar.

The hosts enter Gameweek 25 four places and eight points behind Pep Guardiola’s side in the table, although both teams arrive with identical records from their last six league matches, each recording one win, four draws and one defeat.

Liverpool finally found their rhythm in the Premier League at the sixth attempt in 2026, ending a frustrating run of four consecutive draws and a heavy defeat to Bournemouth with a win over Newcastle.

Despite that upturn in form, Liverpool remain outside the top five, sitting two points behind Manchester United and one adrift of Chelsea, while Brentford and Sunderland remain within touching distance below them.

Manchester City arrive at Anfield having dropped points for the fifth time in six Premier League matches, most recently surrendering a two-goal lead in a dramatic 2-2 draw away to Tottenham.

That result has left City six points behind leaders Arsenal, who strengthened their position with a convincing win over Leeds United last weekend.

Away form has been a concern for City in recent weeks, with the visitors winless in their last three road trips and conceding at least twice in each of those matches.

But a win here would secure a first-ever Premier League double over the Reds.

Team news for Liverpool v Manchester City

Liverpool could welcome Joe Gomez back into contention, with the defender given a small chance of recovering from a hip issue in time for the weekend.

Jeremie Frimpong remains sidelined with a thigh injury, while Conor Bradley, Alexander Isak and Giovanni Leoni are also unavailable.

After starring against Newcastle, Florian Wirtz continues his fine run of form, having recorded nine goal contributions in his last 11 matches after managing just three in his first 21 appearances for the club.

Manchester City remain uncertain over the availability of Bernardo Silva, who picked up a knock against Tottenham and missed the midweek cup win.

Rayan Cherki and Ruben Dias both returned to the matchday squad in midweek, while John Stones is back in training but not yet ready to return.

Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic, Jeremy Doku and Savinho all remain sidelined, while Marc Guehi is available again after cup ineligibility.

Guardiola declined to confirm whether Erling Haaland will return to the starting lineup, despite describing the striker as the best in the world.

Expected line-ups for Liverpool v Manchester City

Liverpool: Alisson; Szoboszlai, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike

Manchester City: Donnarumma; Nunes, Guehi, Ake, Ait-Nouri; Rodri, O’Reilly; Cherki, Reijnders, Semenyo; Haaland

The match will be shown live on Sky Sports, with streaming options available via Sky GO and NOW TV.

    • The Reds have taken 28 league points from losing positions since 2024-25

    Manchester City

Liverpool look a far more threatening side than the team beaten convincingly at the Etihad earlier in the season, and they may be well placed to exploit City’s recent away struggles and defensive absences.

With Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike in strong form, the hosts could edge a high-scoring contest and deal another blow to Manchester City’s title ambitions, but we see a draw as the most likely outcome.https://x.com/LFC/status/2019492471395557516
