Liverpool welcome Tottenham to Anfield on Sunday afternoon in a Premier League clash that carries huge significance for both clubs, albeit for very different reasons.

Arne Slot’s side will be desperate to bounce back after a disappointing week that saw them lose 1-0 at Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday, adding to their shock home defeat to Wolves in their previous league outing. Liverpool sit sixth in the Premier League table going into the weekend, three points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa making Champions League qualification far from guaranteed after last season’s title triumph.

Tottenham, meanwhile, arrive at Anfield in full-blown crisis mode. The club head into the weekend in 16th place in the table with just 29 points from 29 matches, just one point above the relegation zone. Igor Tudor is still searching for his first win since being appointed as interim head coach until the end of the season and pressure is mounting on the former Juventus boss to steer Spurs away from danger.

The visitors’ 5-2 Champions League capitulation against Atletico Madrid in midweek – which saw goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky substituted after just 17 minutes – only added to their woes.

“I think if Tottenham would be number one in the league at the moment, every fan would still expect us to win at home,” said Reds boss Arne Slot.

“Every game this club plays at home we are expected to win. That has nothing to do with the form of the other team or where they are in the league or the quality they have.

“It doesn’t matter who we face. Expectations are always sky high at this club and that is what we are embracing because that also means this club is able to win things, and that’s what we’ve done in the past few years and in their history as well.”

Team news for Liverpool v Tottenham

Liverpool should welcome back goalkeeper Alisson after the Brazilian missed the Galatasaray defeat with a minor issue. Florian Wirtz returned to the starting lineup in Turkey after recovering from a back injury while Federico Chiesa remains absent through illness.

Long-term absentees include Conor Bradley, Alexander Isak, Giovanni Leoni and Wataru Endo.

    Tottenham forward Randal Kolo Muani

Tottenham face a potential injury crisis with up to 11 first-team players unavailable. Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha are doubts after clashing heads against Atletico Madrid.

Centre-back Micky van de Ven is suspended following his red card against Crystal Palace while Wilson Odobert, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Ben Davies, Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur and Mohammed Kudus are all long-term absentees.

Predicted line-ups for Liverpool v Tottenham

Liverpool: Alisson; Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Salah, Szoboszlai, Gakpo; Ekitike

Tottenham: Vicario; Danso, Romero, Dragusin; Porro, Gallagher, Gray, Spence; Kolo Muani, Solanke, Tel

Kick-off at Anfield is scheduled for 4:30pm GMT on Sunday.

    Stats for Liverpool v Tottenham

    • Liverpool have lost just one of their last 31 home league games against Tottenham Hotspur (W21 D9), and are unbeaten in 14 (W10 D4) since a 2-0 loss in May 2011.
    • Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur is the highest scoring fixture in Premier League history, with 209 goals. Liverpool have scored 127 of these, with only the Reds themselves netting more against a specific opponent in the competition (131 vs Newcastle).
    • Tottenham Hotspur have earned 19 of their 29 points in the Premier League this season away from home, a ratio of 66%. In the competition’s history, only Ipswich Town in 2024-25 (68% – 15/22) and Crystal Palace in 1997-98 (67% – 22/33) have ever earned a larger share of their points on the road.

    Tottenham

Despite Liverpool’s recent struggles, the gulf in class and form between these two sides remains substantial. Tottenham’s defensive frailties and lack of confidence make them vulnerable opposition, even for an inconsistent Liverpool side. Slot’s men should have enough quality at Anfield to secure a much-needed three points and ease concerns about their top-four credentials.
