Producer Kathleen Kennedy is set to leave her role as president of Lucasfilm after a 14-year run at the studio, which has been responsible for countless, decade-defining classics such as the Star Wars original trilogy, Labyrinth and the Indiana Jones films.
The first installment in the iconic series about the archaeology professor named in the title, who travels the world collecting ancient artefacts which hold world-bending powers, was titled Raiders of the Lost Ark.It starred Harrison Ford (known for playing Hans in the Star Wars films) and was released in 1981 to widespread critical acclaim and huge cultural relevance. The franchise then spawned four sequels, with the latest being released in 2023 and titled The Dial of Destiny.
The last film came out after a 15-year break, and during a sit-down with Deadline, the former Lucasfilm president revealed it was the leading man who made the sequel happen, confirming that Ford “…did not want Indy to end with the fourth movie [2008’s The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull]”.
“He wanted a chance at another, and we did that for him,” Kennedy added. “I don’t think Indy will ever be done, but I don’t think anybody is interested right now in exploring it. These are timeless movies, and Indy will never be done.”
When pressed if Indiana Jones will hunt down an ancient artefact and fight off bad guys for a sixth time, Kennedy teased that: “You never know.”
She added: “But we are all still here, Steven and Frank and I, and Harrison and George. So we get to say whether there’s going to be any more, or not.”
