Matt James, a former cast member of ‘The Bachelor’, posted about a Toronto restaurant experience that wasn’t easy to understand but at the same time was very funny. After brunch, he asked for a to-go box for his remaining bacon and pancakes. Instead of a box, he was given just a plain brown paper bag by the restaurant which made him inquire on social media if that was the usual practice of the people in the city. In the video that he put up, he was showing the food going into the bag and saying that he was not complaining but he had never seen such a technique before.

It was a perplexing yet amusing situation of Matt James that attracted the public’s attention very quickly and his real confusion was the factor which many people could relate to. The whole incident was happening while James could be heard in the video saying “I’ve never received a brown bag for my leftovers” and at the same time showing the strange wrapping. His jovial manner, he even used laughing emojis in his caption, was the atmosphere for the big reaction that soon followed.
It turned out that a huge number of people not only from Toronto but also from regular visitors flooded the area with their comments and most of them were hundreds of them were unanimous about it: that was not normal at all. One user called it “the craziest thing I’ve ever seen” to which another person replied with “hilarious” but at the same time assuring James that it was an exception. A comment from a person who has lived in Toronto all their life captured the oddity perfectly, “Born and raised and having been living in Toronto for 32 years and this is something I’ve never seen!!!” This was a common feeling, and many were saying they had never had or heard such a thing in the Toronto restaurant scene.
Among the comments, there was a theory that gained popularity, saying that a simple mix-up was the most likely reason behind the whole thing. Someone with vast industry experience gave a lengthy viewpoint: “I’ve worked in the industry for over 20 years. I think the server probably had a brain freeze and will regret this 12 hrs later… OR maybe the person you asked misunderstood ‘box’ as ‘bag’ somehow.” People were agreeing with this logical explanation and even saying that maybe the staff simply neglected to provide the actual container along with the bag.
There were also a few comments that were funny and speculated about more intentional reasons. One of them read, “That worker didn’t want to do his/her job today,” suggesting that it was an easy way out from the job by one worker. Another user humorously mentioned, “Canada is plastic free now. Bring your own container or paper bag,” referring to the eco-friendly measures. But, on the other hand, one response came from the same people saying it was standard for them and just the other day welcoming which instantly generated disbelief and replies from others refuting it that added a comical debate to the thread.
The post also sparked a lot of curiosity among the public about the restaurant involved with numerous users asking James, “name the place” or guessing where the restaurant is. One comment even highlighted a specific restaurant suggesting it was the one that did service. Despite the unusual service, James was still in the same positive mood, replying to the user who said the situation was “wildly upsetting” by assuring them the food “was still good!”

The brown bag left behind method, while not a Toronto custom at all, has nevertheless created and entertained his audience through the transformation of a paradox into such an amusing incident. The event is a reminder that even very simple requests can sometimes result in surprisingly memorable moments. James’s good-natured response made it possible for a brunch that was unclear to turn into a widely shared moment of confusion and humor. It seems that his time in Toronto was pleasant despite this oddity. He even reaffirmed his love for the city in a response.
