It’s been over eight years since viewers last saw Matt Lauer on Today. At the time, this followed reports alleging that Lauer had sexually harassed another NBC alum. Recently, however, the accuser has come out to share their side of the story, complete with a new memoir. During this time, they’ve also shared concern about what the memoir could mean for those close to them.
Matt Lauer Was Terminated From Today Back In 2017
Lauer was previously known for his work with NBC News. Originally working for WNBC in New York City, he gained further attention as an anchor on Today.
In 2017, NBC News announced that Lauer had been terminated from the network. This followed allegations made against Lauer, accusing him of sexual harassment were made by an initially unidentified co-worker. Since this, Lauer hasn’t worked in mainstream media.
The 2019 book Catch and Kill later named an alleged victim of Lauer’s as former NBC producer Brooke Nevils. At the time, she claimed that he had anally raped her in his hotel room while covering the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Brooke Nevils Talked About ‘Rebuilding’ Her Life, As Well As Dark Times
Since then, Nevils has written a book of her own, Unspeakable Things: Silence, Shame, and the Stories We Choose to Believe, which is set for a February 3, 2026, release. Recently, Nevils discussed the book in an interview with NPR’s Fresh Air podcast.
During the conversation, Nevils shared that she was originally concerned about releasing the book. She worried that her children would be “tortured” by the share.
Speaking with NPR, Nevils shared, “It’s my job to prepare them for the hard things in life, and part of that is giving them the opportunity to learn from my mistakes, to be honest with them and say I wasn’t perfect. But I still didn’t deserve what happened to me.”
In addition, Nevils shared an excerpt of her memoir with The Cut, where she discussed how she reportedly “painstakingly rebuilt my life.” At the time, she shared that she was now happily married with two children. She noted, “Every moment with my family is a precious piece of the life that I once believed I no longer deserved to live.”
However, she also touched on darker moments, such as spending time in a psych ward after the alleged 2014 rape. She explained, “I would find myself in a psych ward, believing myself so worthless and damaged that the world would be better off without me.”
As previously reported, on his end, Lauer has denied the allegations against him. Back in November 2025, an insider claimed that Lauer was also eyeing a return to media, possibly television.
