Matthew McConaughey Credits ‘Wet Dream’ For Marriage To Camila Alves

The actor revealed that he was having trouble finding a spouse despite having dated “some wonderful women,” some of whom he’s still friends with, but his moment of clarity came after the dream, and Alves was introduced to him three months later.

The couple has been married for over 13 years now, and Matthew McConaughey shared that part of the secret is to downsize to a “queen-size bed,” instead of the well-known “king-size bed.”

McConaughey has opened up about the struggles he went through before finding his wife Camila Alves and tying the knot with her at age 43.

The “Interstellar” actor explained in his “Lyrics of Living” newsletter that while he was in his 30s battling “the red light vision of being a lifelong bachelor,” he received a “spiritual sign” on how to spot the right woman in his sleep.

At the time, the 56-year-old actor was struggling to find the woman of his dreams despite having “met, spent time with, and seriously dated some wonderful women in my life.”

He has been linked to several Hollywood bombshells like Penelope Cruz, Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd, and Renee Zellweger, but the “True Detective” star noted that his past relationships were ultimately “all stops, no stays.”

“In my mid-30s, I was looking for a lifetime lover, a best friend, and a mother-to-be. I was looking for more, I was looking for the one, I was looking for her,” he shared, per the Daily Mail.

McConaughey then opened up about the bizarre moment of clarity that served as the offshoot for his marriage to Alves.

He said that he had a “wet dream” in which he saw himself celebrating his 88th birthday with his 88 children, their 22 mothers, as well as 22 cars for good measure. The party took place at his country home, and although he never married them, every “woman was serene and satisfied. Every child was smiling, laughing, and healthy. We all knew one another very well.”

He continued, “Each mother and I shared an idyllic memory, the children roosted upon my lap. We hugged, we kissed, we laughed and joked, we cried tears of happiness.”

McConaughey said the women and children were all gathered around him and “looked toward a large-format box camera on a tripod at the top of the driveway,” as if to take a picture together.

The actor noted in his newsletter that he labelled the dream a “spiritual sign,” “a message to surrender.”

He said that it was a prompting “to quit trying so intentionally to find the perfect woman for me, and, rather, concede to the natural selection process of finding her, her finding me, or not. So I quit looking for her.”

“Then she came. Three months later, I met Camila. Twenty years later, she’s still the only woman I’ve ever wanted to take on a date, sleep with, or wake up next to,” McConaughey explained.

McConaughey and Alves got married in 2012 after dating for more than six years. They share three children: Levi, Vida, and Livingston.

The actor opened up about their relationship journey and admitted that he was “scared” of marrying her until a question from his then-four-year-old son Levi convinced him to, per Hello! Magazine.

During an interview on Chris Williamson’s “Modern Wisdom” podcast, McConaughey said that he was rattled when Levi asked him why he and Alves had different surnames at the time, despite already sharing a child together.

“My son comes to me at four years old and says, ‘Why isn’t Mama McConaughey?'” he said. “I’m going through my head. You’re four, dude. I sat there. I was like, ‘God, did your mom put you with this? It’s a great question, but I mean, we’re not because we’re not married. When you get married, you switch your name. Okay.'”

The Oscar winner continued: “And then he just listened and all of a sudden he goes, ‘Are you scared?’ He’s four years old, dude. And I was like, ‘Yeah, I guess I am.'”

It appears McConaughey’s doubts were so serious that he contacted a pastor and other people for help in dealing with them.

“I remember going to a pastor and talking to a lot of different elder men who had had long-term relationships, were married for decades, and stuff, and my pastor goes, ‘Let me just ask you this, Mr. Risk Taker. What’s the bigger risk?'” he shared.

McConaughey continued, “Carrying on like you’re going, it’s going well, or taking the deeper dive into the sacrament covenant of marriage, which should be a covenant between you and her and God. The trilogy will go forward. That will be a whole new adventure in itself. Are you what? What’s a bigger risk? I was like, ‘Oh, the getting married’s a bigger risk.'”

It was after that he made the “affirmative action” after years of dating, saying that instead of doing it, he was “looking for a way to play offense with that choice.”

“I didn’t want to do it because that’s what you’re supposed to do. It’s time. We’ve been dating for this long. We got engaged. I didn’t want to do it by the book,” McConaughey noted.
