History was made when “Sinners” shattered Oscar records, but for Michael B. Jordan, the moment quickly became deeply personal.

As accolades poured in and Hollywood buzzed, the actor’s response cut through the noise.

Instead of public celebration, he chose something far more intimate, revealing the grounding force behind his career and the emotion driving one of the biggest milestones of his life.

The news landed fast. “Sinners” earned a staggering 16 Oscar nominations, the most ever for a single film, and Jordan secured a Best Actor nod. Amid the shock and celebration, he did not hesitate about his next step.

“My mom was my first call,” he revealed to The Hollywood Reporter shortly after the nominations were announced. The moment, he explained, carried a weight that went far beyond awards.

“It was great. A lot of tears and the reason why I’m even in this industry and why I’m acting at all — why that was even an idea,” he continued. “To talk to the woman who started it all first meant the world.”

The historic achievement placed “Sinners” above previous record holders “Titanic,” “La La Land,” and “All About Eve,” each of which topped out at 14 nominations.

However, for Jordan, the significance lay less in statistics and more in the personal journey that led him there.

Despite the headlines, Jordan admitted the scale of the recognition had not fully settled in. He described himself as still “digesting” what the Academy’s response meant for the film and everyone involved.

Reflecting on the nominations, he emphasized the collective effort behind the success.

“It’s really a testament to the film as a whole and all the pieces involved and the people that went to go see this movie and watched this film,” he said.

The recognition extended beyond him, with nominations for Best Director for Ryan Coogler, Best Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku, and Best Supporting Actor for Delroy Lindo.

Rather than framing the moment as a personal victory, Jordan consistently redirected the spotlight to the collaborators and audiences who helped elevate the project into Oscar history.

In the aftermath of “Sinners” shattering a long-standing Oscars record, director Ryan Coogler admitted the scale of the moment caught him off guard.

In a chat with Deadline shortly after the nominations were announced, Coogler described the recognition as both surreal and deeply gratifying, especially given his original expectations for the film.

“I did not have any expectations when it came to the recognition of what they [the team] did,” he said. “For me, people just showing up to the movies and having a good time, that would’ve been enough. That is worth all the effort. But that people would consider the craft and the achievements that went into it individually. It’s so rewarding.”

Coogler also took time to highlight the emotional significance of seeing Jordan earn a Best Actor nomination, reflecting on their long creative history together.

“Obviously, the three of us have been working with Michael since 2012. So that’s a 14-year relationship. So to see him achieve this recognition by his peers, it’s just the best feeling to have. We just feel really, really, really happy that they said yes to the project, first of all, and happy for them,” Coogler said.

Jordan’s mother, Donna, has become a quiet scene-stealer throughout awards season. At the 2026 Golden Globes, she drew laughs after reacting to host Nikki Glaser’s playful monologue about her son’s dual role in “Sinners.”

“I can’t believe it, we got two Michael B. Jordans. When I saw that, I was like, Nikki B. Jerkin’, because that was awesome,” Glaser joked, quickly realizing Donna was in the audience.

Donna, who held a drink in her hand, rolled her eyes as many laughed to the joke.

Glaser quickly followed up with a grin, adding, “I’m so sorry. That should’ve been a DM.”

The moment became one of the ceremony’s most shared clips, further cementing Donna’s unexpected popularity during her son’s awards run.

Fame And Family Keep Jordan Grounded

Days later, Jordan reflected on the Golden Globes during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!“

Looking back, he acknowledged where the attention really landed. He said, “I had fun, but my mom stole the show. … I’m pretty sure all her girlfriends are, like, texting her and sending her every meme and every clip possible.”

Host Jimmy Kimmel pushed the conversation further, asking, “Does your mom get uncomfortable when women openly lust after you?”

Jordan responded with a knowing laugh. “I think by now she’s used to it,” the “Creed” star said. “So she just gives a little eye roll and just kinda keeps it pushing. She doesn’t really respond too much.”

As Oscar night approaches, the story behind Jordan’s success feels as compelling as the accolades themselves.
