Microsoft is bringing its full-screen “Xbox Mode” to every kind of Windows 11 PC, which includes laptops, desktops, and tablets.
Now, you have been able to try what was then known as the Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE) in preview mode since last November. But you had to be a part of the Windows Insider and Xbox Insider programs. However, as The Verge pointed out, it needed work and a new name. Hence, the change to “Xbox Mode.”
As expected, Microsoft has been looking to bridge the gap between PC and Xbox gamers. Today (Mar. 12), it was revealed that Project Helix, the company’s next-gen system, will not only be able to play PC games but will also go alpha in 2027. This was said while also reassuring the future of Xbox consoles (yeah, right).
At the 2026 Game Developers Conference, Microsoft also announced that it is opening Advanced Shader Delivery to all developers on the Xbox Store, speeding up game load times by providing precompiled shaders — something Valve already offers to devs on Steam.
Microsoft currently has an open blog post showcasing all the releases from the Game Developers Conference, including advances in DirectStorage for faster asset streaming and Evolving DirectX for what the company calls the “Machine Learning era.”
