Regina native Mitch Picton could be going out as a Grey Cup champion, according to Saskatchewan Roughriders’ general manager Jeremy O’Day.
“We really haven’t talked to Mitch too much. My understanding is that Mitch is probably not going to play, but we probably need to follow up on that. The last we spoke with his agent, that was kind of the plan for Mitch,” O’Day said.
The 30-year-old Picton has spent nine seasons with his hometown team after being selected in the fifth round, 37th overall during the 2017 CFL Draft. The six-foot-two, 200-pound receiver has suited up in 64 career regular-season CFL games and five post-season match-ups. He’s recorded 96 receptions for 1,081 yards with six touchdowns while averaging 11.3 yards per catch and earned praise for his versatility.
Picton spent five seasons (2013-2017) at the University of Regina, playing in 37 Canada West games. He posted 169 receptions for 2,431 yards with 24 touchdowns. After registering 58 receptions for 834 yards with 11 touchdowns in eight regular season games during the 2016 regular season, the rangy target was named a Canada West all-star and a first-team All-Canadian. His cousin Noah Picton earned the Hec Crighton award that same year.
While with the Rams, Picton set the program record for career touchdowns receptions with 24 and tied Jason Clermont’s single-season mark with 11 TD catches in 2016. He ranks second in school history with 58 grabs in one season and third in yards with 834. His 2,431 receiving yards puts him fourth all-time.
The Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School graduate’s last possible CFL game could be the 112th Grey Cup.
