Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has finally addressed his omission from India’s ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming Australia tour, saying that his non-selection was purely the decision of the selectors, coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill. The veteran fast bowler, who last featured in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, clarified that his fitness is not an issue and that he remains committed to returning stronger through domestic performances.

In a candid video shared on his YouTube channel, Shami dismissed speculation regarding his fitness and form. “There have been many rumours and memes. People want to know my opinion on the non-selection for the Australia series. I will just say that getting selected is not in my hands; it’s the job of the selection committee, coach and captain. If they feel I should be there, they will select me, or if they feel some more time is needed, it’s in their hands. I am ready and practicing,” he said.
Shami’s recent struggle and dip in form
Since returning to international cricket earlier this year, Shami’s performances have been below his usual high standards. This year, he has taken 11 wickets in 11 ODIs at an average of 30.63, including five against Bangladesh and three versus Australia in the Champions Trophy. Also, his form in the IPL 2025 for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was underwhelming, managing just six wickets in nine matches, which raised further questions about his rhythm and consistency.
Responding to fitness concerns, Shami insisted he is in good shape. “My fitness is also good. I will try to do better because when you are away from the ground, you need to remain motivated. I played in the Duleep Trophy, bowled 35 overs comfortably, and there were no issues with my rhythm or fitness,” he said.
Even Shami’s recent domestic outings haven’t yielded the expected impact – he picked just one wicket for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy, conceding 136 runs. Though, the 35-year-old remains determined to prove his worth and push for a national comeback.
With India moving toward a generational transition in ODIs under newly-appointed captain Shubman Gill, Shami’s immediate return to international cricket remains uncertain.
