WestJet will offer free in-flight Wi-Fi on more flights starting later this year.
The airline is working with Telus to deliver Starlink satellite internet service on flights. We already knew about that partnership, which was first announced back in 2024. Earlier this year, WestJet upgraded 16 of its planes with the new Wi-Fi experience.
Now, WestJet says it plans to complete installation of the new WestJet Wi-Fi on all of its Boeing 737-800 and Max-8 aircraft by the end of the year. Upgrades to the rest of the company’s fleet are “ongoing.”
Wi-Fi is free for WestJet Rewards members, and the program is free to join.
The upgrades are part of a larger effort by WestJet to improve the in-flight experience on its aircraft. This includes refreshing the cabin with upgraded Premium seating and expanded Extended Comfort seating options. Economy will also get changes, like new seats with adjustable headrests, better back support and a fixed recline design that “helps preserve personal space.”
WestJet isn’t the only airline trying to improve the in-flight experience. In May, Air Canada and Bell teamed up to offer Aeroplan members free in-flight Wi-Fi on select flights. I got the chance to try it out myself later that month and was generally impressed by how well it worked. Ookla, the company behind the Speedtest app, released a report detailing how the two airlines’ Wi-Fi offerings stacked up to each other.
In other WestJet news, the company experienced a cybersecurity incident in June 2025, which led Canada’s privacy commissioner to open an investigation.
