Life is often unpredictable, with winding twists and turns that no one sees coming. For some people, they are perpetually dealt a bad hand, and many continue to have to navigate life even amid a string of unlucky occurrences and tragedy. Yet for some, there is light at the end of the tunnel, as all of the struggle sometimes leads to something significant.
This was the case recently for a mother named Shelby Martin in Tennessee. The 30-year-old mother had the “perfect birth plan” in store to welcome her fourth child. However, as life often does, there were other plans in the works. Elements of this plan included “skin to skin contact right after birth, delayed cord clamping,” and the “vaginal delivery” she had always imagined.
However, a wrench was thrown into that plan after she found out that her baby was “measuring big.” Speaking about her situation to PEOPLE, Martin said, “There was a real risk he could get stuck during delivery. That changed everything. I knew the safest choice was a C-section, and thankfully, I had an amazing OBGYN and care team at TriStar Centennial who I trusted completely.”
She said, “Sure, I grieved the loss of my ‘perfect birth plan,’ but looking back, I’m just so grateful.”
Tennessee Mother Welcomes Huge Newborn
Shelby Martin welcomed her son (Cassian) at HCA Healthcare’s Tristar Centennial Women’s Hospital in Nashville on July 29. The baby came into the world weighing 12 pounds and 14 ounces. This made him the largest baby delivered at that location in three years.
Speaking more about her son, Martin told PEOPLE, “We had a heads up that he was going to be big, but I would have never guessed almost 13 pounds. Looking back on bump pictures, I probably should have known.”

Martin continued, adding, “Everyone was amazed by his size! He made such a big impression that nurses and doctors from all over the hospital came by the NICU just to meet him. He quickly became a little celebrity during his stay. Every time we visited, someone from the care team was already snuggling him. They truly adored him, and as a first-time NICU mom, that meant everything to me. Knowing he was so loved and cared for brought me so much comfort.”
