The 2025 Indian Premier League was a rollercoaster campaign for the Mumbai Indians (MI). The five-time champions endured a shaky start, losing four of their first five matches, but made a stunning comeback by stringing together six consecutive wins. Their resurgence helped them grab the fourth playoff spot with a record of 8 wins and 6 losses.

Mumbai Indians’ campaign in IPL 2025

In the playoffs, MI displayed their trademark fighting spirit by defeating Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator. However, their journey ended in Qualifier 2 against a dominant Punjab Kings outfit. Despite the heartbreak, the season featured several positives — most notably, Suryakumar Yadav’s stellar form and Jasprit Bumrah’s impactful return after missing the initial games.

5 players MI can retain ahead of IPL 2026

As the IPL 2026 mega auction looms, the MI management faces tough decisions regarding player retentions. With a mix of experience and youth, the franchise will need to identify players who can shape their future. Based on consistency, impact, and potential, here are five Indian players Mumbai Indians are likely to retain ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.

    1. Rohit Sharma – The experienced anchor

    • 2025 Performance: 418 runs in 15 games with 4 fifties

Even though Rohit Sharma is in the twilight of his career, his class remains unquestionable. In IPL 2025, the former MI skipper showed glimpses of his vintage best, anchoring crucial innings and guiding youngsters with his experience. His ability to absorb pressure and accelerate when required still makes him a valuable asset at the top of the order.

Moreover, Rohit’s presence brings stability to MI’s batting lineup. His tactical acumen and calm demeanor make him an ideal senior figure in the squad. The franchise might look at him as a mentor-leader hybrid, grooming the next generation while continuing to deliver with the bat.

    2. Hardik Pandya (c) – The leader and all-round engine

    • 2025 Performance: 224 runs in 15 games (HS: 48*) | 14 wickets (Best: 5/36)

Hardik Pandya’s return to the Mumbai Indians setup in 2025 marked a new chapter for the franchise. Appointed as captain, Hardik brought energy and determination, leading the team through a turbulent start and into the playoffs. His all-round performances added immense value — providing balance with both bat and ball.

While his batting returns were modest, his leadership and crucial bowling spells, including a five-wicket haul, underscored his influence. Hardik’s dynamic style and aggressive mindset embody the modern MI spirit, making him an automatic retention choice heading into IPL 2026.

    3. Suryakumar Yadav – The Mr. 360 of Mumbai

    • 2025 Performance: 717 runs in 16 games with 5 fifties

Arguably the standout performer of the season, Suryakumar enjoyed a dream run in IPL 2025. He finished as the second-highest run-scorer of the tournament, combining innovation with consistency. His ability to find boundaries all around the ground, irrespective of the match situation, made him the backbone of MI’s batting.

Suryakumar’s explosive form earned him the MVP award and played a pivotal role in MI’s turnaround mid-season. Given his experience, adaptability, and loyalty to the franchise, retaining him will be among MI’s top priorities for the 2026 season.

    4. Tilak Varma – The rising star

    • 2025 Performance: 343 runs in 16 games with 2 fifties

Tilak Varma continues to impress as one of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket. His calmness under pressure and mature stroke play have made him a dependable middle-order batter. In 2025, Tilak added crucial runs in several tight contests, displaying remarkable temperament and adaptability.

MI will likely retain him not just for his batting prowess but also for his long-term potential. With mentorship from seniors like Rohit and Suryakumar, Tilak could evolve into a cornerstone of the franchise for years to come.

    5. Jasprit Bumrah – The spearhead of MI’s bowling attack

    • 2025 Performance: 18 wickets in 12 games (Best: 4/22)

Bumrah once again proved why he is considered one of the best fast bowlers in the world. Despite missing the first few matches due to workload management, Bumrah finished as MI’s second-highest wicket-taker. His deadly yorkers and ability to deliver under pressure make him indispensable to the team’s bowling setup.

His presence provides both leadership and composure in crunch moments. Heading into IPL 2026, Bumrah will be central to MI’s strategy, anchoring a bowling lineup that continues to evolve around him.
