A Netflix actor who appeared on Narcos has passed away at the age of 55. The star’s death was confirmed by an actor’s union. Tributes have since come out in tribute to the actor.
The Actor Was Said To Be 55 At The Time Of Their Passing
The actor was said to have had a career spanning three decades. They were noted to have appeared in major Hollywood productions and international films.
The actor’s death was announced by an actor’s union. At the time, no cause of death was listed. The star reportedly did not publicly show signs of illness, nor did they have previous health concerns reported. They were said to be 55 at the time of their death.
The actor was identified as Gerardo Taracena. He became known to many for the Netflix series, Narcos: Mexico. This series was developed as Narcos’ fourth season before being developed into a companion series. On the series, Taracena played Mexican smuggler Pablo Acosta, who serves as part of the Guadalajara cartel.
Many also know the actor through Mel Gibson’s epic action-adventure film, Apocalypto. In the 2006 role, Taracena played the villain, Middle Eye. He is also known for appearing in the films Man on Fire, The Violin, and Sin Nombre.

Taracena’s role in El Violín also won him the Ariel Award for Best Supporting Actor. His final role was in Amazon Prime’s Cometierra.
Mexico’s Asociación Nacional de Actores, or National Association of Actors, reported the tragic news through a post on Instagram. A translation reads, “The National Association of Actors deeply regrets the departure of our colleague Gerardo Taracena @eltaracena. We join in the grief that has bothered his family, friends and the artistic community. R.I.P.”
Taracena also shared his life with fans on social media. His final post showed him as a teenager in Berlin, Germany, in 2004.
As noted by The U.S. Sun, various tributes have since poured out in honor of Taracena in light of his passing. In a statement, the Mexican Academy of Cinema shared that the actor’s “work and his unforgettable face will remain in the memory of our cinema.” The Centro Cultural Helénico also shared, “His powerful acting shaped a solid career in Mexican cinema, where he brought to life characters of great intensity and strength.”
On Taracena’s recent Instagram post, fans also shared similar condolences. One fan wrote, “Rest my good ‘Pablo Acosta;’ one of the best Mexican actors.” Another wrote, “Bon voyage from my favorite Mexican actor.”
