Fans of the cult-classic Space Western Firefly are scouring the internet for clues this week after a series of cryptic social media posts suggested that the crew of the Serenity may be returning.
The buzz began on the Instagram account ‘Once We Were Spacemen‘, a joint venture between series leads Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk. According to Dark Horizons, over the last few days, the account has posted videos featuring Fillion visiting former castmates, including Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, and Summer Glau.
Despite airing only one season starting in 2002, Firefly has maintained one of the most dedicated fanbases in television history. The show followed Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Fillion), a veteran of a failed galactic civil war, as he led a ragtag crew of smugglers through the fringes of a 26th-century solar system.
While the series was cancelled by FOX before its first season even finished airing, its story was concluded in the 2005 feature film Serenity. However, despite becoming a cult hit and a fan favourite, it performed poorly at the box office, grossing $40million worldwide against a $39million budget.
All posts point to a major announcement on March 15, but Fillion has already taken to social media to debunk some of the more common theories. He said: “Some of you have guessed convention, podcast, or crossover. You are wrong.”
Industry insiders and fans alike are debating whether the announcement concerns a revival on a major streaming platform, a high-budget animated series, or perhaps a long-awaited video game adaptation.
