Netflix has recently released the official teaser for their upcoming TV series Man on Fire, based on the five-novel series of the same name by A.J. Quinnell. Yahya Abdul Mateen II (Wonder Man) is set to star in the lead role as John Creasy, a character Denzel Washington once portrayed in Tony Scott’s 2004 film adaptation.
The first novel in the series has previously been adapted to film twice, in 1987 and 2004, making this its first television adaptation. The series will also be adapting the follow-up novel in the series (The Perfect Kill), expanding beyond the story that the previous adaptations explored.
The series follows John Creasy (Abdul-Mateen II), “a man plagued by PTSD, who is striving for a fresh start. However, when an incident occurs, the once highly skilled Special Forces mercenary is pulled back into the line of fire, beginning a hunt for revenge.”
Since Yahya Abdul Mateen’s Emmy win for HBO’s Watchmen, the award-winning actor has gone on to star in projects such as The Trial of the Chicago 7, Us, Ambulance, The Matrix Resurrections and the Aquaman films. Mateen was last seen leading Marvel and Disney+’s latest hit TV series Wonder Man which was met with strong critical praise.
The teaser features explosive action and fight sequences. Late in 2024, Deadline reported that during production, Mateen II sustained a minor injury on set, which forced filming to pause for a short time. Writer and showrunner Kyle Killen (Fear Street Part One: 1994) will also executive produce, with Steven Caple Jr., Vicente Amorim, Clare Kilner, and Michael Cuesta sharing the directing duties.
Man on Fire will premiere exclusively on Netflix on April 30th.
