CBS Mornings have shared Neve Campbell’s words with them about her decision to return for Scream 7, stating she “didn’t think I could live with myself”.
The star became one of the horror genre’s most beloved Final Girls when she appeared as Sidney Prescott in Wes Craven’s 1996 slasher masterpiece Scream and its four additional sequels (1997, 2000, 2011 and 2022).
The franchise focuses on Campbell’s character and her friends being stalked by a mysterious masked killer known as Ghostface, who inspired a new copycat killer in every sequel following the first film.
Following her appearance in the fifth film, which was structured as somewhat of a reboot with new characters and storylines, Campbell shocked Scream fans when she shared in a Variety statement that she “won’t be making the next ‘Scream’ film,” with a disagreement about pay being the source of conflict.
“As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to ‘Scream.’ I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise. It’s been a very difficult decision to move on,” the actress stated. “To all my ‘Scream’ fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”
However, after being absent from Scream 6, Campbell soon returned to Woodsboro as Sidney to fight against Ghostface for a sixth time and will star once again as Sidney in the seventh instalment.
“When I made that decision, I just didn’t think I could live with myself walking on set,” Campbell shared with CBS when reflecting back to the initial retirement of her iconic character. “I just didn’t feel right. I just knew that my value to this franchise was bigger than what had been offered. For me, I needed to make that choice.”
The star also added that when she initially “said goodbye to it” she really “thought that was it.”
“I knew that there was a good chance that would be it,” Campbell explained.
“And when I spoke out about it, it wasn’t really to sort of rally everybody,” the actress explained further. “It was really just my truth at the time, and the fact the people got behind me, I got lovely support, and that was nice. And I do feel that other people need to make those choices.”
Scream 7 will star Campbell, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Isabel May, Anna Camp, Michelle Randolph, Jimmy Tatro, McKenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, Sam Rechner, and Joel McHale.
Be sure to check back on Thursday, 26th February at 9 am for our review of the film.
Scream 7 hits cinemas on February 27th.
