Freedom Mobile customers should be wary of a text scam pushing people to log into a fake website to address a billing issue.
Some customers reported on Reddit that they received texts supposedly from Freedom Mobile warning of an unsuccessful automatic payment. The messages direct customers to log into Freedom’s website to update their payment info. However, the link in the text goes to a fake website designed to look like Freedom’s login page.
While the link in the text might be a dead giveaway for some more tech-savvy users, others might not catch the illegitimate URL and think they’re on Freedom’s actual website. Anyone duped by the fake login page may inadvertently give up sensitive information, such as their Freedom account login, other personal details, or worse, even payment information.
Moreover, we reported last week on Freedom’s recent data breach, which resulted in some customers’ personal information being accessed. That could give scammers a list of targets to go after, or allow them to leverage leaked personal information to make more sophisticated scams.

It’s always important to stay vigilant, but especially for Freedom customers following the recent breach. As a general rule, it’s best not to click links in any text messages, regardless of who the message is from. If a company contacts you about payment issues or any other problem, it’s safer to go to the company’s website yourself instead of clicking any link included in the message or email.
If you receive scams or fraudulent messages like this, it’s also worth taking a few minutes to report. The RCMP recently launched a national cybercrime and fraud reporting site, enabling Canadians to file online reports about incidents of cybercrime like this.
