Newcastle have stormed into a lead against Qarabag in the Champions League, check out the goals here

Newcastle have taken complete control of their Champions League play-off tie against Qarabag, storming into a two-goal lead inside 10 minutes.

The Magpies travelled to Azerbaijan to face a side who gave Chelsea a stern test earlier in the competition, but have already made light work of their opponents.

Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock inside three minutes, with Dan Burn finding himself in Qarabag’s final third, and sliding through his England team-mate, who fired a shot in at a clinical angle.

Six minutes later, and the visitors had doubled their lead.

This time it was Malick Thiaw’s turn to get on the scoresheet. After an initial Newcastle corner was cleared, Kieran Trippier emerged with the ball and whipped a teasing cross into the box.

Newcastle’s big defender rose highest in the box, heading home and wheeling off to celebrate alongside his team-mates, who were already in cruise control.

It settled any early nerves from the Magpies, who were able to settle down and completely take control of the game.

And it leaves a mountain to climb for the hosts, especially with a return leg still to come at St James’ Park.
