Original Nintendo Switch games just got an upgrade on Switch 2.
In the new 22.0.0 Switch 2 system update, Nintendo has added a “Handheld Mode Boost” setting that will allow Switch 2 games in handheld mode to run as if they were docked in TV mode. This means that you can increase the default 720p resolution for many games to 1080p, while frame rates may also be improved depending on the title.
However, Nintendo notes that “certain functionality may be affected” when this mode is enabled, and this includes the attached Joy-Cons being recognized as a wireless Pro Controller and touch screen features potentially being disabled. Otherwise, the games themselves should function fine.
Additionally, Eurogamer notes that a small number of titles don’t receive any upgrade with Handheld Mode Boost, presumably because they have motion controls or touchscreen functionality that can’t be emulated when docked. This includes Super Mario Maker 2, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, Pikmin 1+2, Pokémon Let’s Go! Pikachu and Eevee, Clubhouse Games and Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! It’s likely that Switch 2 users will discover additional games that aren’t compatible with the feature as they play around with it more.
Still, it’s a nice option to have for most Switch games. Once you’ve updated your Switch 2, you can enable the new feature by going System Settings –> System –> Nintendo Switch Software Handling –> Handheld Mode Boost.
Other features added in patch 22.0.0 include the ability to save notes about people on your Friend List, the ability to invite friends to GameChat rooms you’re in, 10-second fast forward and rewind toggles on eShop videos, and “general [unspecified] system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience.”
The full list of patch notes can be found on Nintendo’s website.
