Nintendo has revealed our first official look at the live-action The Legend of Zelda.
In three images released on social media and the Nintendo Today mobile app, we see protagonists Link (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth from CBC’s Son of a Critch) and Princess Zelda (Renegade Nell‘s Bo Bragason).

Interestingly, Zelda is wearing her blue outfit from Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, while Link is sporting his signature green tunic that’s featured in a variety of games. They’re also standing in a giant field, which is presumably the iconic Zelda location, Hyrule.
The images come just after set footage from the New Zealand production of the Sony-produced film was leaked over the weekend. In it, we saw a distant look at Ainsworth and Bragason in costume, as well as apparent confirmation that Severance‘s Dichen Lachman, who wasn’t previously announced as part of the cast, is playing Zelda guardian Impa.
Despite all of this, we still don’t have an official story synopsis. Zelda having her Breath of the Wild outfit could suggest some sort of specific adaptation, or it could simply be an aesthetic choice that nods to one of the series’ most beloved games. It’s also possible the film will go the direction of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and tell an original story that draws from a variety of games. Given that Ocarina of Time is arguably the most iconic Zelda, it’s easy to see how that could be a heavy influence on the movie, if not a direct basis for the story.
Either way, it’s nice to see some official stills, especially this early on. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes‘ Wes Ball is directing the film, while Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Spider-Man producer Avi Arad serve as producers. The Legend of Zelda film will open in theatres on May 7, 2027. Over a year before that, Nintendo and Illumination will release The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in April 2026, and the first trailer for the film dropped last week.
