An NYPD Blue alum has been deemed “unrecognizable” due to massive weight gain. Yet, it is not normal weight gain, but it has been considered somewhat deadly. So, who is it, and can they get themselves back in shape? Keep reading for more details on what is going on.
NYPD Blue Alum Going Down Deadly Path
The one thing about the now-defunct NYPD Blue was that it had a lot of nudity and intimacy. Many cast members had to be involved in sex scenes, which, for broadcast television, was a huge deal. Yet, combined with the riveting storylines, millions of viewers tuned in every single week. For twelve seasons, the series dominated television screens, and it was a sad day when it ended. Now, one of the show’s favorite stars has resurfaced, and there’s a lot of concern about their health and weight.
David Caruso made waves as Detective John Kelly on NYPD Blue. Interestingly enough, he was only on for one season. He then moved on to CSI and CSI: Miami, where he remained for a decade. Since 2012, he has retired from acting, but lives on in reruns.

Now, he has resurfaced, and fans are shocked by his appearance. David, now 70, seemingly has put on weight, but with that is a fear that he could die. As it turns out, he has stopped doing any sort of physical activity, which used to be vital in his life. It has caused so much stress that an insider shared this:
“David’s put on so much weight that he was almost unrecognizable. He’s just not taking good care of himself. This is a guy who used to run for miles and barely break a sweat. Now he practically shuffles. He’s completely let his health go and everyone says he needs some sort of intervention.”
A little over two years ago, the NYPD Blue alum looked disheveled and unhealthy while pumping gas.

Doctor Gabe Mirkin has estimated that the former actor weighs roughly 215 pounds. Although he does not work with David Caruso, he then went on to add this terrifying statistic:
“He has massive abdominal obesity, which means his liver is full of fat. He is at significant risk for a premature death from his fatty liver.”
Could He Save His Life?
Of course, there are options for the New York City native. He could likely hop on the GLP-1 train if he so desired. However, the former NYPD Blue star lives a very quiet and private life. Therefore, he likely does not care about aesthetics, nor does he have a need for physical perfection. Yet, when he stepped out in February 2026, it was heartbreaking.

After fans saw his transformation in late 2023, they were blown away by how he had let himself go:
- I do adore him, but he looks like Chucky now
- There is aging gracefully and then there is whatever this is.
- Can someone do a CSI on why he looks so terrible?
Hopefully, he just gets healthy so he can live a long, prosperous life. Were you an NYPD Blue fan, and are you shocked at his transformation? Let us know in the comments below.
