Oscar-winning Jennifer Lawrence has revealed why she turned down the role of Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 alternate history comedy-drama Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and cited online trolls and hate as the source of doubt.
As reported in Deadline, the Hunger Games star appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and shared that Tarantino was keen to see her as part of his cinematic re-telling of Hollywood events in 1969. However, opinions on social media held the actress back as she stated: “And then everybody was like, ‘She’s not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate’”.
“I’m pretty sure it is true. Or it’s that thing where I’ve been telling the story this way for so long that I believe it,” Lawrence added. “No, but I’m pretty sure that happened. Or he just was never considering me for the part, and the internet just like went out of their way to call me ugly.”
The role of Tate then went to Margot Robbie. The film revisits and reimagines Tate’s tragic and heartbreaking murder at the hands of the Manson cult, which happened when she was just 26 and eight-and-a-half months pregnant. It also stars Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio among an ensemble cast.
2019 then saw Lawrence reprise her role as Raven/Mystique in 20th Century Studios X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
