The Government of Ontario has unveiled a new initiative to encourage people to upgrade their appliances to more energy-efficient models.

On Wednesday, Energy Minister Stephen Lecce announced the enhanced Home Renovation Savings Program, which will provide Ontarians with cheques of up to $200 for buying energy-efficient refrigerators, freezers and laundry machines.

The rebate program begins this fall and extends to all homes on Ontario’s electricity grid, including condos and apartments. Purchases can be made at any retailer, online or in-store, and rebates will be issued within 60 days of approval.

More information can be found on the Home Renovations Savings Program website.

The rebate is part of Ontario’s broader Energy Efficiency Framework aimed at reducing the province’s peak demand by 3,000 megawatts by 2036, the equivalent of taking three million homes off the grid.
