OpenAI is making another change to ChatGPT, saying it will bring ads to its extremely popular AI chatbot.
The company says it will bring ads to both the ChatGPT Go and Free tiers. Go was recently released, and costs $11/mo in Canada.
OpenAI didn’t offer a specific timeline for ads across the two tiers, but said testing will begin in the U.S. (not Canada for now) over the next few weeks. For now, ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise will all remain ad-free.
Instead of massive pop-up ads, the company plans to test ads at the bottom of ChatGPT answers when relevant, based on the conversation. OpenAI claims that Ads will be clearly labelled and separated from the chatbot’s answer.

It is important to note that OpenAI says the new ads will not appear on accounts under 18 (either predicted or confirmed) or on sensitive/regulated topics like health, mental health, or politics.
In terms of security, OpenAI says it won’t share any chats with advertisers, while also allowing users to disable personalization, alongside any data used to show ads.
While this is most likely the option that will be officially released, OpenAI has said that it will use the feedback gathered during testing to “refine” how these ads work.
