Deadline has exclusively reported casting updates on the upcoming Sony Classics drama from Oscar Winner Tom McCarthy, confirming the film will feature Marvel’s Paul Rudd, American Horror Story’s Evan Peters, Birdman’s Amy Ryan, The Holdover’s Paul Giamatti, Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany, Severence’s John Turturro and, lastly, Zero Dark Thirty’s Jason Clarke.
The film’s title is yet to be revealed, but filming will reportedly begin next month. McCarthy also shares screenwriting credits with Thomas Bidegan and Noé Debré; the project is based on the Nathaniel Rich book, Losing Earth, published in 2019.
The official plot states the McCarthy film is “set at a beachside resort in Florida in 1980, when twenty experts gather for a weekend conference on a global issue that is starting to gain traction: the effects of Co2 emissions on the climate.”
Additionally, it will focus on a “group of scientists, activists, and policymakers” who”have one simple mandate from Congress — write a statement about what to do. Easier said than done.”
Hollywood golden duo Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (Good Will Hunting) are set to produce on behalf of Artists Equity, alongside Jigsaw Productions’ Alex Gibney, Wendy Schmidt, Richard Perello, and Robert Kessel. Additional producers include Hammerstone Studios’ Alex Lebovici and Concordia’s Thomas Bidegan, Noé Debré, Nathaniel Rich, Billy James Parrot, Laurene Powell Jobs and Davis Guggenheim. Andrew Lauren Productions and Galisteo Media also have production credits.
Tom McCarthy won his Oscars for 2015’s Spotlight, starring Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams and Michael Keaton. He has also directed 2021’s Stillwater, starring Matt Damon, whilst also having story creation credits on Pixar’s 2009 classic Up and Disney’s 2018 Christopher Robin.
Rich’s original book was originally published as an article in The New York Times in 2018 and was also adapted into an AppleTV docuseries.
