Dune: Part Three is already shaping up to be one of the most technically ambitious films in recent years, and it starts with the lens.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Denis Villeneuve worked with Atlas Lens to handcraft a custom spherical IMAX lens specifically for the film. The goal was clear: to capture the unique visual language of Arrakis in a way that feels entirely new.
Cinematographer Linus Sandgren, stepping in after Greig Fraser shot the first two films, described the vision simply: “I envisioned lenses that could create specific optical characteristics, particularly the flares, that would be unique to this film.”
Denis Villeneuve also noted that the lenses “allowed us to capture the essence of Arrakis in a way that was unique to this movie.”
That shift matters. Dune: Part Three adapts Dune: Messiah, a story with a darker, more introspective tone. Building new technology isn’t just aesthetic – it’s storytelling.
And this is becoming a pattern. Directors like Christopher Nolan are doing the same, with his upcoming film The Odyssey being shot entirely in IMAX. These aren’t just large-scale productions anymore. They’re technical enhancements, pushing what cinema can physically achieve.
With Dune: Part Three, Villeneuve isn’t just continuing a franchise. He’s expanding the language of film itself. And like other auteurs, he is setting a new benchmark for what blockbuster filmmaking is. Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, alongside Zendaya as Chani, with the third film bringing back a number of key characters from across the series. Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, and Anya Taylor-Joy are all expected to take on much larger roles this time around, reprising their parts as Princess Irulan, Lady Margo,t and Alia.
Returning cast members also include Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, and Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, who appears to return in some form. The film will also introduce Robert Pattinson as Scytale, a new antagonist, with Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke set to appear as Paul and Chani’s twin children, Leto II and Ghanima.
Dune: Part Three is set for release on December 18th.
