During an event at the University of Texas hosted by Variety and CNN, award-winning actor Timothée Chalamet took a moment to share an update on the third installment in Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic Dune.
The star, who plays the lead role of Paul Atreides, the son of Leto I Atreides and Lady Jessica, commented that the third film will present “freedom of movement and freedom of choice.”
Chalamet also affirmed Dune Part 3’s tone, stating: “And with Denis, we really had a good rhythm. It’s the eeriest one. It’s a big swing.”
“What I think you see at the end of the second one, and across the third one, is yourself in ‘Interstellar’ and Heath Ledger in ‘The Dark Knight’ and Marlon Brando in ‘Apocalypse Now’ and stuff like that,” Chalamet added.
He then took a moment to backtrack, re-stating he “cannot put [himself] in that same boat.”
Chalamet then concluded: “Let’s just say, it’s these big movies where you could sneak in something. A curveball.”
Moving on to sharing details of the film’s technical aspects, the actor shared: “On the first ‘Dune,’ we had an ornithopter sequence that I got a chance to do again in the third, but this time I was way more geared up.”
He added, “On ‘Dune 3,’ as opposed to the first movie, I came out early and studied the control panel — all sorts of hieroglyphics and things that aren’t tethered to reality. I wanted to know what each button did, and invent a dynamic for myself with it.”
Dune Part 3 will be co-written by director Villeneuve and screenwriter Jon Spaihts. It will see the return of cast members Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor-Joy and Jason Momoa. The Batman star Robert Pattinson is also confirmed to appear in the film as Scytale, the Tleilaxu Face Dancer who schemes to overthrow Chalamat’s Paul.
Dune Part 3 will be released on 18th December, 2026.
