It has been reported by TheInsneider that horror actor Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring and Insidious) will appear in the third season of HBO’s The Last of Us, the survival, post-apocalyptic adaptation of the video game series of the same name, which features stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.
Wilson has recently completed filming for Cape Fear by directors Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg with Apple TV, which is another adaptation of John D. McDonald’s 1957 book The Executioners, following J. Lee Thompson’s 1962 retelling starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, and Scorsese’s 1991 adaptation starring Robert de Niro and Nick Nolte, both titled Cape Fear. Now Jeff Snieder of TheInsneider has reported exclusive confirmation that the star will feature in the upcoming season of The Last of Us.
There is no current confirmation of who Wilson will be playing, although Dark Horizons has shared fan theories “that he’ll be playing Dr Jerry Anderson, the father of Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby, which is one of the few roles Wilson’s physicality fits that haven’t been cast as yet.”
Dr Anderson appears in the original game and its sequel (2020) as a surgeon working for the Fireflies to find a needed cure for the Cordyceps brain infection plaguing civilisation, and teaches Washington Liberation Front’s Abby (his daughter) the importance of wildlife tracking as a skill. He attempts to perform surgery on protagonist Ellie as he believes her possession of a mutated fungal growth within her is the key to a vaccine. However, protagonist Joel Miller bursts into the surgery to rescue Ellie, killing the doctor in the process.
The Last of Us debuted in early 2023 to 4.7 million viewers, coming just behind House of the Dragon for HBO‘s largest show debut, and reaching nearly 40 million viewers over the next two months. The show’s first season holds a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 84 out of 100, with its second (which aired in the spring of 2025) achieving 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 81 out of 100 on Metacritic.
The third season was renewed on the 9th April, 2025, set to present the second act of the 2020 video game sequel and to be “larger” than its predecessors.
