According to The Insneider, recently Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson (One Battle After Another) has reworked a script originally written by the Tony-winning playwright Patrick Marber (Closer) for acclaimed, legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese. The film is titled What Happens at Night and is set to star Leonardo DiCaprio – in his seventh appearance in a Scorsese film – and Jennifer Lawrence.
It’s been confirmed that the script rewrite did not come from any means of conflict; instead, just a feeling of needing some polishing on the writing.
Anderson is no stranger to occasionally dipping in to help with script rewrites, previously sharing with The Wrap: “I love to contribute in any way I can if somebody reaches out for help….It’s always a privilege to say, ‘Let me tell you my thoughts on the script.’”
The director reflected on previous experiences with having to work on Killers of the Flower Moon and also Ridley Scott’s historical feature, Napoleon. The former oversaw his work from the 2017 non-fiction book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by journalist David Grann, and the latter from the documentation of the French emperor of the same name.
“Both of those things were a thing with Joaquin (Phoenix), a thing with Leo (DiCaprio), and obviously with Marty and Ridley,” Paul Thomas Anderson added.
He also expressed that his fellow filmmakers and actors affirmed his feelings of “encouraged and confident.”
Anderson’s previous writing credits include all ten of his feature films, such as Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Licorice Pizza. He has been nominated for a total of 14 Academy Awards, four for his screenwriting skills, and has finally been awarded three Oscars for his 2025 political drama-comedy One Battle After Another (Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay). The film was loosely inspired by the Thomas Pynchon novel Vineland, published in 1990.
No release date yet for What Happens At Night, which is now filming.
