Phil Collins, One More Night

In the 152^nd edition of Throwback Vibez (2025), we recollect and reflect on “One More Night” by Phil Collins.

The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶! Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶 is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past.  The records that grace this column are older, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ancient – no fossils 🦴! All genres of music are welcome. In the 152^nd edition of Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶 (2025), we recollect and reflect on “One More Night” performed by Phil Collins.   

“Please give me one more night / Give me one more night / One more night / ‘Cause I can’t wait forever.” Noted, Phil Collins (b. 1951). The Academy and Grammy Award-winning musician delivered a surefire bop with “One More Night”. “One More Night” is the fifth track from his diamond-certified (12-times platinum), 1985 album, No Jacket Required. No Jacket Required won the Grammy for Album of the Year at the 28^th Annual Grammy Awards. Collins was also awarded the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male, for the songs from the album. “One More Night”  peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Collins’ first number one single from No Jacket Required.  It was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1990.  

“One More Night” is a stunning pop ballad from the start. It benefits from a buttery smooth and warm sound, led by the keyboard accompaniment. There is also drum programming on this particular track, which became more prevalent in the 1980s. Beyond his keyboard, drum programming, and songwriting contributions, Phil Collins shines on lead vocals.  His tone is beautiful, and throughout much of the song, his voice sounds tender. As “One More Night” progresses, Collins digs in more, while maintaining a refined and sophisticated sound. Beyond Collins’ lead, Collins’ background vocals during the chorus are striking.  The songwriting is love-oriented and romantic, with the chorus leading the charge.  Collins wants her back for just one more night, repentant of his shortcomings within their relationship. “I’ve been trying, ooh, so long / To let you know, let you know how I feel,” he sings in the first verse. In the second, Phil asserts, “And I was wondering, should I call you / Then I thought maybe you’re not alone.” In the third and final verse, he informs her, “But if you change your mind, you know that I’ll be here / And maybe we both can learn.” One final note regarding the timeless “One More Night”. Two words: saxophone solo 🎷. What better way to cap off a quintessential ‘80s classic with the fine blowing of Don Myrick (1940 – 1993)?
