Manchester United’s resurgence will be put to the test at Newcastle on Wednesday.
The arrival of Michael Carrick has transformed United’s fortunes, taking 19 points from a possible 21 across the interim head coach’s seven games to surge up the Premier League table.
They start in third with a place in next season’s Champions League firmly in their sights.
Carrick’s hometown club Newcastle have not had the season boss Eddie Howe – or the club’s Saudi Arabian owners – would have envisaged.
Thirteenth-placed Newcastle have won one of their last seven league games and need to start picking up points quickly if they want to play European football next season.
