Prime Video will begin streaming the entirety of SCTV in Canada on March 3.
This is particularly noteworthy since the iconic Canadian sketch comedy series has historically been difficult to watch, outside of a handful of episodes and clips on YouTube. Originally aired intermittently between 1976 and 1984, the series follows a fictitious TV station during broadcast day. It’s notable for helping to launch the careers of numerous famous Canadians, including the late Catherine O’Hara and John Candy, Eugene Levy, Martin Short, Rick Moranis and Harold Ramis.
All in all, this is great news for Canadians and comedy fans in general. Hopefully, this might also spur conversations regarding that SCTV reunion that was announced (and filmed) way back in 2018. Directed by legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese and presented by comedian Jimmy Kimmel, the special reunited the likes of Levy, O’Hara, Short, Dave Thomas, Andrea Martin, and Joe Flaherty.
It was supposed to be released in 2018 in partnership with Netflix and CTV, but that came and went without any official word. Three years later, Flaherty claimed the title had been shelved, but one of the companies that worked on it, Toronto’s Insight Productions, said it had merely been postponed due to Scorsese’s many other commitments. Ultimately, it’s unclear what happened to the special.
